Yeah, I think we should definitely do this:

DNR asks drivers to give turtles a brake

ST. PAUL — Wildlife managers are asking Minnesota drivers to give turtles a brake.

This is the time when female turtles move from lakes, streams and wetlands to their nesting areas. Unfortunately, roads separate many of those nesting areas from the turtles' winter homes.

Carol Hall, herpetologist for the Department of Natural Resources, says many turtles are killed on roads each year, especially during the nesting season.

If people see a turtle on the road, they should slow down and drive around it. While many people want to help turtles cross, the DNR says the best approach is to let them cross unassisted. If it's necessary to help, move them across roadways in as direct a line as safely possible.

Minnesota has nine turtle species, some of which are protected.

Yesterday, on the out-of-the-way road I live on, I saw a dead turtle that had been run over by a car. Maybe the driver hadn't seen it, but it wasn't like his/her car would've been going fast.
Anyway, there are a lot of turtles out right now, and we should "give them a break". It's extra hard to see baby turtles.
And I disagree that you shouldn't help them across; they are slow and sometimes they need extra help to get out of the way. Just make sure to put them in as 'direct a line' as possible. Also, try not to get run over yourself! :)

Well, I was inspired to create this blog partly because of my sister's fionse, who is making a newsletter that included news about the Gulf disaster. Though I don't live close to the Gulf, I was affected by it in that my family was forced to change vacation plans to avoid the possibility of an oil-slicked beach. Such a tragedy is beyond all of our comprehension. I keep hoping that it's really not as bad as it seems and nature will correct itself, somehow wiping away this stain with its cleansing oceans. But I fear that's not the reality, and that the effects we are just beginning to witness will only fully be seen in the future.
I am not sure what to do about it, but there's always writing. Words have power, that is, if people read them. I'm not sure if they'll read this. But I just want to raise awareness, not just about the Gulf disaster, but about other things in ecology, and contrary to the melodramatic name, not just about disasters. But I'd like to bring things to people's attention, and maybe get something done, if it's only something small.
I would also like to include local things here, too. La Crosse, Wisconsin is a place burgeoning with life, teeming with nature, and I live right by the marsh, the bluffs, and the EcoPark, so I am extra aware of it. I will include updates about the EcoPark, which needs funding to continue to its next stage and include animals which will educate people about the animals that live around them.
Thank you for coming to this blog, and welcome, if you're out there! I hope we change the world.
